Whats your favourite two player game?

OK guys.. what are your favourite two-player games of all time?

I'll start the ball rolling:

1. Lemmings - (Amiga) Two players, one hundred lemmings each, get as many of your own lemmings to your finish line as possible while trying to kill off as many of your rival's as possible. Brilliant!

2. Twinkle Star Sprites (NEO GEO/Saturn/DC)- A timeless and unique two-player Vs shmup which is perfectly balanced and very very playable. It even gives you your own personal boss to attack the other player with.. what more could you want??!

3. Return Fire (3DO) - I was reminded of this playing Jet Pac Refuelled. It's basically 2-player flag raid.. in a tank. Or a jeep. Or helicopter. Nicking your mate's flag from under his feet then hot-footing it back to your base with him/her in frantic pursuit is one of those classic gaming moments. :)

4. Silkworm (Arcade) - Loved this game in two player mode - very good co-operative shooter. One person would be the chopper, the other the jeep. The jeep was a bit vulnerable but had a nifty machine gun that could fire 180 degrees and I always quite liked playing it, which was good because my friend always wanted the helicopter. Bloody fly-boys.

5. Jackal (Arcade) - I've already covered this in some detail in the Rogues Gallery so I'll keep it short - Jackal is bloomin' marvellous.

6. Archon (C64) - A sort of chess-like action-strategy game where two people could battle it out as the forces of Light or Darkness. When you tried to take an enemy piece the action switched to an arena-shoot-out to the death between the players. Inspired stuff.

7. Wizball (C64) - One player could control Wizball, the other the 'cat-a-lite' Nifta, in this psychadelic side-scrolling C64 classic from Sensible software. Wizball was responsible for blowing up the baddies, Nifta was responsible for collecting dollops of paint. A slight fun-factor bias towards Mr. Wizball then but still cracking stuff.

8. Bruce Lee (C64) Me and my brother used to play this for hours. He was Bruce, I was the Green Yamo, or something. It was supposed to be some sort of Oriental Incredible Hulk but it looked like a green blob. But there's nothing better than repeatedly kicking your little brother in the head with a green blob or anything else for that matter..

9. Rampart (Arcade) A really original and unique premise. Build up your own mighty castle, then attack your opponent's one while trying to fill the gaps in your walls as he tries to break into yours. Or something like that. It's good.. trust me.

10. Outfoxies (Arcade) Imagine Elevator Action crossed with Powerstone and this is what you'd get. Kill or be killed in huge 2D environments like planes, trains, ships, aquariums (complete with man-eating sharks) with anything you can lay your hands on. The whole screen zooms out depending on the distance between your adversary. Technically it's an amazing game.

OK those are some of my faves. What are YOURS?

I gave it quite a bit of thought,
but I decided I just couldn't figure out which one was best!

One side note: As you'll notice, many of my choices are a bit more recent. While I certainly love classic games, I didn't really get many opportunities to partake in many of the multi-player games with a friend: most of my days were spent playing one-player games. I loved the Lemmings, but I never had the chance to play it in 2-player mode! Oh yeah, and Rampart was tons of fun too, but I had only the rare chance to play it.

So, these are in absolutely no particular order:

1.) Joust (Arcade)
Who could deny the healthily balanced mechanics of such an early example of choose your friend-or-foe, coop or comp game play!

2.) Metal Slug (Arcade)
Knock-down-drag-out bullets and bloodshed, only made all the better with a pal (not to mention they make an awfully good shield)!

3.) Golden Axe: Revenge of Death Adder (Arcade)
Shameful it never saw the light of day at many arcades let alone a console, but it is solid beat-em-up that appeared at the dawn of the killer fighting games, and included nice coop assists to boot.

4.) General Chaos (Genesis)
An amazing gem of a game, very intricate and complex, yet quickie arcade-style skirmish squad-based warfare, complete with the signature Game Refuge (Rampage and Xenophobe) stlye!

5.) Street Fighter Alpha 2 (Saturn)
The most played SF, that I continue to play to this day with an adept fellow fighting game fanatic!

6.) Vampire Savior (Arcade/Saturn)
The closest we will likely ever get to a fighting game set in the Ghouls'n Ghosts world. Manic and showy, like puppet theatre writ large!

7.) Rampage: World Tour (Arcade)
The premise is so much fun, good for a few minutes of beating up the world. Even better with some rock music playing in the background! Light on longetivity however. Maybe some day 3D will truly do it some justice.

8.) Gauntlet (Arcade)
A bit light on content, but the idea of a coop game in such an early age of gaming was quite a whimsical and unique experience!
The later Xbots was a lot more engaging, but it was way too expensive...as was Cadash (in fact a truly amazing game to see in an arcade)

9.) Starcraft (PC)
I had to throw in at least one PC masterpiece...although it has been long since overblown as The national game-sport in Korea, it was a lot of fun in its day, when the fan base was just barely growing and offices would occasionally have a match or two during breaks. I liked the option of coop as well as competitive play.

10.) Samurai Shodown II (Arcade)
Easily one of the best fighting games ever made. Ninjas, Kabuki actors, Japanese goblins, Chinese Warlords...It has it all!

Some great choices there Dain. I think a lot of Street Fighter Alpha 2 also.. never really got into Alpha 3 or SF III, for me it remains the most enjoyable SF game. Vampire Saviour too is another personal favourite.. amazing artwork and animation.. plus gotta love the insane BB Hood!

Golden Axe 2 is another fave, I actually managed to get hold of the arcade PCB a few years back and can't bring myself to part with it..

Really ought to do a GA overview on DAM..
